In couples counseling, I operate from an approach called Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which is an effective therapy tool that has been validated by over 20 years of ongoing research led by Dr. Sue Johnson.  It is generally a short-term (8-20 sessions) approach, specifically designed for couples counseling and marriage therapy.  Studies indicate that approximately 85–90 percent of couples show significant improvement in their relationships after engaging in this therapy.

EFT is a non-judgmental, collaborative and respectful approach to couples counseling and marriage therapy.  It helps to strengthen and secure the bond between the couple.  

 

Most couples seek therapy when they find themselves "stuck" in negative emotional interactions. It is this negative interaction or repetitive negative cycle of anger, blame and/or silence that keeps the couple from feeling connected. Through the process of creating a non-judgemental and safe environment I help the couple identify and change the underlying pattern of interaction that keeps them apart.  Couples will begin to understand their relationship at a deeper level through the exploration of their emotional interactions and learn how to "reach" out for the other in new ways to meet their emotional needs for connection, comfort and care. 

 

Emotionally Focused Therapy has added benefits.  Effective treatment with EFT helps individuals in the relationship experience a stronger sense of safety and support that translates to added abilities to handle life's conflicts and challenges with more ease.  This translates to improved relations at work.  EFT can also help individuals strengthen their bonds with friends and family members.   All of these improved relationships lead to a healthier, happier you.
